A Review of New College of Florida really has to start off slowly because there are just so many people who have never even heard of New College of Florida, much less recognize how unique this little educational gem really is. There are, of course many public institutions of higher learning that have solid academic reputations . Schools like Rutgers in New Jersey, the University of California at San Diego, UMass and UConn might come to mind. But working its way to the top of the college rankings among public colleges and universities is the, very much under the radar, New College of Florida. Back Story, Please. To be honest New College of Florida isn't brand new. In fact the college was operating as an independent private school back in the 1960's . Eventually it was absorbed by the State of Florida University system and became a part of the University of South Florida, though it still maintained a rather separate identity and campus. It was not until 2001 that New College of Florida officially was launched as the 11th member of the State of Florida University System. In that year New College cut ties and branched out on its own as an totally separate college within the public college system in the State of Florida. Part of what distinguishes New College of Florida is that in addition to having its own administration and board of trustees, a vestige of the original local foundation that built New College back in the '60's continues to exist as New College Foundation and continues to provide the kind of endowment that allows for many scholarships and small class sizes. The school offers the same low tuition that other state facilities offer and is able to maintain its own original vision of a school that teaches for the future through funds furnished by the Foundation, in essence having it both ways. New College Academics. Certainly the most enticing aspect you will discover in any review of New College of Florida is the excellent and unique academic structure provided here. Yes this is a Liberal Arts College that offers traditional majors in 25 fields. But this is a school that teaches in its own unique style. Students work directly with faculty to map out the direction in which they wish their studies to proceed, frame projects and papers together and grow intellectually as a result of this cooperative form of learning. The student to professor ratio is an excellent 11:1 and students find much of their work is done in small groups with professorial direction. An astounding 100% of the professors at New College have doctoral degree or the terminal degree offered in their field of expertise. This guarantees for excellent instruction and academic sharing. There is at New College of Florida a very private school feel on an amazingly public school campus. Students work on a contract basis and need to complete the conditions of seven contracts over the course of the four years at New College. The year is arranged in two four month semester, interrupted by a single month when independent and project oriented work takes place. All student work is evaluated without use of a grading system. Instead students receive a very thorough narrative report from professors which encourages and supports student growth and improvement . The Student Body. Students who come to New College of Florida are students who are geared to achieve academically. It's not a school to go to if you just want to make it through the classes. It is a school for academic achievement and plenty of hard work. It is also a school where students come who have lots of demonstrated academic ability. In fact New College of Florida is referred to as "the Honors College " of the Florida University system. People who come here are smart, self motivated and interested in intellectual growth . The total enrollment is small but it truly does represent the top tier of those who are applying to go to a public college in Florida. The students who come here also are students who are willing to take a chance on a no name school. They recognize that when they graduate from New College they may not have an Ivy League degree but they may come close to having received an Ivy League level education and are well prepared to move on to the next level. The national recognition that New College has attained continues to make attendance here and the degree your receive a good ticket to graduate school in Law, business and many other advanced student regimens. Perhaps most surprising of all is that the students who come to New College of Florida are not all native Floridians. Classmates assemble here from all over the country and all over the world. A bargain is a bargain and students who come here really get their money's worth and then some. The Location. For students who enjoy a mild to warm climate all year round and who don't mind a bay view from their campus, well New College of Florida might just be the right place for you. Located some 50 miles South of Tampa in the city of Sarasota, New College of Florida has an idea location. Of course you will have to be disciplined to keep to the books, but when study time is over you are in a beautiful seaside location. Going to New College of Florida puts you in a very unique academic sphere, but it also puts you in a very special place. The City of Sarasota has been named by Money Magazine as the top small city in which to live in the entire country. That's in part because the city offers great music, theater, arts and of course sensational public beaches. If you had to choose a city to live in while you attended any college, Sarasota would certainly be in the running. Add to that the chance to attend a great school at bargain rates and you start to see a real gem of an educational option. So What's Missing. When a review of New College of Florida reveals such idea learning and living conditions the cynic in us all usually takes over to ask so what's wrong here, what am I missing. Well not much. If anything, some students may find the small total numbers in the classroom and on campus too small. If you really want a large campus with lots of action and lots of bodies, then perhaps this isn't the spot for you . You will find plenty of student activities at New College but they are on a smaller scale than you will find at other public institutions with larger student enrollment. Activities tend to surface from student interest rather than being imposed by an activities calendar. Sports are for fun, health and interaction here. This is not a school that fosters competitive athletic programs . There are athletic facilities for students to use and enjoy but if your are looking for intercollegiate athletics in Florida there are ten other state operated facilities you might want to check in to. What's missing at New College of Florida can be a deal breaker for some students, especially for those who are looking for a highly traditional college experience with lots of high powered on campus activities, big time interscholastic athletics and minimal course loads. That clearly is not what is going to be happening at New College of Florida. The best review of New College of Florida is of course the review done by the individual student. But encouraging students to at least consider New College of Florida are the rave reviews offered by a variety of national magazines who put New College among the Top Five public colleges in the nation for the product and price they offer to incoming students. Now that should get your attention. |
