If you are looking to become a physician in the state of Florida, there are several things you must make sure you have before you even consider being a Medical student. First of all, I found out that in order to be accepted in any medical school you have to have a BS or a BA degree from an accredited institution, and most of your classes are mandatory to be taken in school. In other words, scores taken from online courses will not be considered, particularly classes that involve biology, pathology, etc. That is not including the pressure of having a high GPA score and also providing proof of being involved in the community and showing that you are capable of handling this career mentally. So, not only you have to keep up with competitive scores but you also have to prove yourself to be physician's material. I researched three different universities in the state of Florida, The University of Central Florida, The University of Florida, and The University of South Florida. The most shocking feature is the fact that out of three thousand applicants, only one hundred of them will be accepted at each university every year. The three different universities are very similar in the following: they are only accepting over 100 students currently for enrollment; except forThe University of Central Florida whose first generation only accepted 41. All students go through a very tough process of interviews and tests, and the three universities require students to take the MCAT (Medical College Admission Test) and they all require students to apply through the AMCAS (American College Application Service. The three Universities also require a BS or BA degree from an accredited institution and require pre requisites to be taken in a regular classroom setting or residency instead of online, so colleges offering online classes are not an option for you if you want to pursue a physician career. Tuition is a big concern for future students, and it is quite high per year, of course due to the type of training required. The University of Florida's average tuition is at $18,380 annually for an undergraduate ("ufla.edu," 2010). The University of Central Florida is the newest facility in the state of Florida, and was established in 2006 by the Florida Board of Governors, the Florida Legislature, and the Governor of Florida to address the physician shortage to mention one of the reasons; the College has annual fees of $25,000 for Florida Residents ("ucfla.edu," 2010). The University of South Florida was established in 1965 by the Florida Legislature, the cost for tuition is $26,832.00 making the University of South Florida the most expensive when ironically, currently their students are the ones with the lower GPA's and MCAT test scores.("usf.edu," 2010) In conclusion, the admissions criteria is governed by the same standards in all three Universities, however, The University of Central Florida attracts students with higher GPA and MCAT scores, so you will have plenty of competition there. If you are looking to save a few thousand bucks per year,The University of Florida is the lowest priced. However, if you want the best education, then consider the University of South Florida. They proclaim to have the best Teachers, as noted in 2007 with 36 percent of the best physicians from USF included in the list of best physician teachers in the state. Good luck with your career! |
